Open since 1992, the Mall of America is one of the most visited attractions in the world with millions of visitors a year. There are more than 100,000 malls in the US alone. Department of State, and I can guarantee that you will be surprised to hear the enormous size of the largest mall in the United States. Shopping malls are now much more than just a place to buy a new outfit.
Some even include amusement parks, aquariums, and everything in between. The malls that make the top 10 list have so many stores that you could spend hours, if not days, looking around and enjoying everything they have to offer. Without having been there, I don't think you can even imagine how big it is. In total, the Mall of America is located on 5.6 million square feet of land.
And, for comparison, to give you an idea of the size, there are approximately 71 professional football fields. Now, where is this gigantic mall? You'll find it a 15-minute drive from downtown Minneapolis and honestly, you can't miss it. The Mall of America first opened its doors in 1992 and, since its opening, has been one of the most visited attractions, with more than 40 million visitors every year. This mall has it all, and we mean everything you could possibly need.
With more than 520 retail stores and more than 50 restaurants, you're sure to find a store or kitchen that suits your tastes. And, if that weren't enough, the mall even has the largest indoor theme park in the United States and the Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium, which is home to more than 4,500 marine creatures. Third place goes to the slightly smaller King of Prussia shopping center outside Philadelphia. This mall measures just under 3 million square feet.
King of Prussia is every shopper's dream with luxury stores, eight department stores and three food courts. Turns out this 2.8 million square foot mall is the largest mall on the West Coast, and with more than 275 stores, it's no surprise that. In 1967, the Segerstrom family opened the South Coast Plaza in one of their bean fields in Lima. Their idea brought them great success.
And, within six years, they were already expanding to accommodate more retailers. The South Coast Plaza has more than 270 stores, both high-end and main street, making it an excellent destination for all your shopping needs. The Aventura Mall in Miami, Florida, may rank fifth as the largest mall in the United States, but this 2.7 million square foot mall is number one in Florida. In addition to its exclusive spiral steel slide, the Aventura Mall has top-tier designer stores, six department stores and more than 300 retail stores that attract 28 million shoppers every year.
Number six brings us to the Del Amo Fashion Center. This mall located in Los Angeles is part of Simon Property Group. They also own the King of Prussia, the Aventura Mall and many others. This mall was originally two separate malls, whose owners merged in 1981 to form the 2.5 million square foot mall we know today.
With 2.4 million square feet of stores, restaurants and beauty salons, it's no surprise that The Galleria is one of Houston's most visited destinations. The Destiny USA shopping center in New York originally opened its doors in 1990 under the name of Carousel Center Mall. This successful mall spans more than six floors with retail stores, restaurants, a 19-screen Regal cinema, entertainment venues and major food courts. Entertainment options don't stop at Destiny USA's 2.4 million square feet.
There are games rooms, an old carousel, the largest suspended rope circuit in the world and a go-kart track. Even kids who “hate shopping” would love to visit this mall. In fact, they would probably be begging to come back. The Roosevelt Field shopping center in Garden City, New York, was built on an airfield.
But in 1955, contractors transformed it into a single-level outdoor mall. Today, however, you can shop on two levels that encompass more than 2.3 million square feet. The mall has more than 270 stores, incredible restaurants and a cinema with eight auditoriums. However, what we find impressive are the skylight windows that still make you feel like you're shopping outdoors.
Sawgrass Shopping Center is approximately 400,000 square feet smaller than the Aventura Mall. But, even with its slightly smaller size, it's still tremendously impressive. And if that weren't impressive enough, the Ala Moana Center, which spans more than 2.4 million square feet, has tranquil koi ponds, traditional Hawaiian gardens, 290 stores, and 80 diverse restaurants. The Palisades Center in New York is the second largest mall in the state and, overall, the thirteenth largest in the United States.
This mall covers 2.2 million square feet and has more than 218 stores, entertainment venues and restaurants. The mall has four floors, a food court with capacity for 2000 people, a cinema with 21 screens, an ice rink and an obstacle course for climbing five levels. Millcreek Shopping Center covers 2.2 million square feet of land in Millcreek Township, Pennsylvania. This one-story shopping complex is the second largest mall in Pennsylvania and is home to 163 stores that sell everything from clothing and jewelry to phones and sporting goods.
Even the small island of Puerto Rico is home to one of the largest malls in the United States. At number 15 is Plaza Las Américas, which has 2.17 million square feet. It was the first indoor mall in Puerto Rico and ranks first as the largest mall in the Caribbean. Inside the mall, you'll find three floors with more than 300 stores, a 13-screen cinema and seven main tenants, such as Macy's and JCPenneys.
And finally, number 16 goes to the Woodfield Shopping Center, located in Illinois. The Woodfield Shopping Center first opened its doors in 1971 with just 59 stores. However, today, shoppers can walk through 234 stores and eat at numerous restaurants on the first and second floors of the mall. Mall of America is currently the most popular and most visited mall in the United States.
The mall has a retail space of 5.6 million square feet. With six department stores and more than 450 stores, boutiques and restaurants, the King of Prussia Mall is the third largest mall in the United States. This 2.2 million square foot mall has more than 236 stores, four main tenants and the only Balenciaga store in Northern California. It is advisable to check if the shopping center has sufficient parking facilities to avoid inconvenience when parking.
The third largest mall in the country, King of Prussia Mall in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, is also one of the oldest malls in the United States. Many consider it the second most concentrated retail location for haute couture brands after the South Coast Plaza Mall. The South Coast Plaza shopping center, located in California, is ranked fourth among the largest malls in the United States. One of the busiest malls in the country, it is among the highest-earning malls in the United States.
The shopping center was built on an old junkyard in an industrial section of Syracuse known as the “Oil City”, as part of a general remodeling of the area. This mall is so diverse that it even has the Nickelodeon Universe theme park, an indoor ski slope and the Dreamworks water park. In addition to being the second largest mall in Southeast Florida, Sawgrass Mills has the distinction of being the largest single-storey mall in the United States. Like the Mall of America, it combined shopping and entertainment venues, such as a Nickelodeon Universe theme park, the DreamWorks water park and the Big SNOW American Dream indoor ski slope.
